About the author: James T. Hinton is a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan and the author of the book Merchants From the Bottom Up: The Political Legacy of the “Free Speech Movement,” one of the first books to embrace the idea of free speech as an idea, a means to “subscribe to” and win over members of an audience. His research has been published in scholarly literature including the NYT, the American Sociological Review and The Canadian Journal of Sociology.
